Most phone cases do not need a manual. You buy one, it is black, it fits, the end. A Carved is slightly different. It is real wood and hand-poured resin, made in Elkhart, Indiana. It exists exactly once. And the design retires forever the moment you buy it. First-time buyers tend to have questions, which is convenient, because thousands of people have already gone first and written everything down.
just put my first carved case on and immediately realized that the twenty year quest for the finest phone case in the universe was now finally over.
That is one way to put it. What follows is the field guide we wish every first-timer had: six short chapters, built from 33,774 reviews, ending with a small but honest warning.
Chapter 1: Pick your line
Carved cases come in two lines. The Traveler is the flagship: a dual-layer case with rubberized shock edges and a raised lip around the screen, built for people whose phones lead eventful lives. It is where most first-timers start.
This is my second case for a new phone. My first carved case was for an iPhone 11 and lasted forever. Beautiful and rugged at the same time - what’s not to love!
The Live Edge is the premium tier. The wood keeps its raw, natural edge, so the organic line where grain meets resin runs straight across the back of the case. Owners tend to describe the feel before they get around to the look.
I wasn't prepared to feel something like this, it's so soft, so smooth
A reasonable rule of thumb: if your phone gets dropped on job sites and trailheads, start with a Traveler. If you have ever stopped walking to admire an epoxy river table, start with a Live Edge.
Chapter 2: Pick your design
Here is the part that makes a first Carved unlike any case you have shopped for before. Every design is an individual slice of wood and an individual pour of resin. It is cut, finished, photographed, and given a name in the workshop. Then it is listed once, sold once, and never made again.

Practically, that changes two things. First, the product photo is a portrait of the exact object that will arrive at your door, grain and all. Second, there is no restock and no reorder. If a design has been arguing with you for two days, someone else may settle the argument for you. One reviewer decided to test the claim:
The case is fantastic. I was a bit skeptical of the "one of a kind" claim. But the day after I ordered, sure enough the page with my case on it stated "no longer available ".
Chapter 3: What arrives
Orders ship from the same Elkhart workshop where the case was poured. Inside the box, reviewers keep cataloguing the same three things: the case, a handwritten thank you on the packing slip, and a reusable Braverly bag. None of it is strictly necessary for protecting a phone. All of it shows up in the reviews anyway.
Very nice case. I liked the bag it came in and the handwritten thank you on the receipt. It made the case feel special.
It shipped and arrived in just a few days. The Braverly bag it arrived in is a great addition to the purchase knowing Carve is supporting and empowering others.
Chapter 4: The first week in hand
The first thing new owners report is not the look. It is the feel: real wood runs warmer than glass or plastic, the sides are textured where your grip lands, and the buttons click. The reviews are oddly unanimous about the buttons.
Pictures don’t do it justice. The back looks great, fits well in the hand and the buttons are nice and clicky. 10/10
Then come the compliments. You did not buy the case for strangers, but strangers will have opinions, usually within the first week. Have an answer ready for where you got it.
This was my first Carved case purchase - and it did not disappoint! It is beautiful and absolutely unique, I've already received compliments and have referred several others to Carved.
Chapter 5: If something goes wrong
Mail gets lost. Accidents happen. And a one-of-one cannot simply be swapped for an identical unit, which is exactly what first-timers worry about. The reviews are blunt about how this actually goes: a small team of real people answers, and they make it right.
Carved really came through when my last case was coming apart. They stepped up and replaced it - no questions asked. They are the only case I will buy.
Had an issue with my first order and Carved made it right. Second case came out absolutely beautiful.
A replacement will be a different piece, because there is no such thing as an identical one. Judging by the reviews, that part tends to work out.
Chapter 6: A warning about how this ends
A responsible field guide tells you how the story usually ends. The phrase "new phone" appears in 1,296 of Carved's reviews, and it is almost never the start of a complaint. It is the start of a ritual: upgrade the phone, pick the next case.
I get a new one every time I upgrade my phone. ... Will continue to buy these cases until they stop making them or I die.
Very big fan, I love it! I got my first carved case back in 2015, excited to get another 10 years later!

There is no known cure, and the catalog does not help: the same wood and resin turns up as wallets, knives, chargers, bracelets, and rings. Buy your first Carved with the understanding that the word "first" is doing real work in that sentence.
