Letters from an Indiana workshop

What a small team in Elkhart sends out with every order, and what 33,774 reviews keep sending back.

The pour station at the Carved workshop in Elkhart, Indiana.

Most packages say nothing. A label printed in one warehouse, a box taped shut in another, a doorbell, done. Nobody wrote to you, because nobody was there. Then a Carved box arrives from Elkhart, Indiana, and someone has written on the packing slip. By hand. A thank-you, often a smiley face, sometimes a name.

Customers notice. They notice so often that the notes have become a running theme in the reviews, and the names on the slips come up like recurring characters. Reviewers thank Jen by name. They mention a note from Jamie, a message from Ariana. Strangers writing back to the people who packed their box, like pen pals.

Pictures don’t do it justice. The back looks great, fits well in the hand and the buttons are nice and clicky. 10/10 (thanks for the handwritten note Jen!)

What we send you

The workshop is in Elkhart, Indiana. Every day someone is cutting real wood into blanks, and someone else is mixing resin to pour over them. Tanya, one of the artists here, hand-pours the resin into trays, tipping color across the wood in swirls that will never happen twice. Nothing is printed. Each case, wallet, knife and charger is one pour of one tray on one day, and then that design is gone for good.

When the finished piece ships, a person writes the thank-you on the slip before the box closes. It costs almost nothing, and it changes how the box feels when you open it. One customer put the whole thing better than we ever have:

These cases are made by actual people. I know that sounds goofy but every day, these people get up, cut up some wood, get some resin mixed in with the wood, and these lovely and wonderful cases are the end product.

The bag it arrives in

Many orders arrive wrapped in a small reusable cloth bag from Braverly. Customers keep finding second lives for them: charging cables on trips, a kid's art markers, the car's center console. One reviewer bought several extra bags once she learned who makes them, writing that "they support a woman-owned/run business in Thailand." The wrapping has its own story, which feels right for what is inside.

The case came so nicely packaged and the braverly bag was a special touch. Taking the phone out from its special made bag was like unwrapping a special gift (to myself).

What you send back

Reviews are supposed to be star ratings and shipping complaints. Ours read like return mail. Across 33,774 reviews (4.9 stars), people tell us where they grew up, which trip the grain reminds them of, who the knife was for. They write to the workshop as if they had met the person at the bench, and in a sense they have: that person signed their slip.

Very nice case. I liked the bag it came in and the handwritten thank you on the receipt. It made the case feel special.

When a letter goes wrong

Handmade things sometimes go sideways, and this is where small-workshop mail beats warehouse silence. The reviews hold the receipts. A man whose wedding ring stopped fitting after he lost weight ordered a Carved Signet Ring as its replacement, and got the size wrong. The workshop made it right anyway.

I messed up the size. They would have been within their rights to tell me to just order another one. Instead, they went so far above and beyond to get me the perfect ring.

Another customer ordered a knife, wallet and bracelet bundle for their dad and received the wrong one. Within 20 minutes of emailing photos, a replacement was confirmed with one-day air shipping, and they were told to keep the wrong bundle as an apology. A longtime customer found a stress crack in the resin of a new case, wrote in that evening after the offices had closed, and a replacement was on its way the next morning, within half an hour of his follow-up email. And sometimes the letters are local: one customer in Elkhart ordered the wrong size case and asked to swap it in person.

I ordered the wrong size case and contacted them and they were so accommodating to me. I live in Elkhart so asked if I could just return it locally and get a new one; it was ready within a couple days.

Hands finishing and polishing a wood and resin case
Sanded, sealed and polished by hand before it ships.

That is the whole pitch, honestly. A Carved piece comes with a return address in the old sense: a workshop you could drive to, people who answer, a name on the slip. The wood grew once, the resin set once, and the person who poured it will know if you write back.

Questions people write in

Who actually makes these?

A small team of artists in Elkhart, Indiana. Real wood is cut into blanks, resin is hand-mixed and poured over it by artists like Tanya, and every finished piece is sanded and polished by hand. Because the grain grew once and the pour set once, no two pieces are ever alike.

Is the handwritten note real?

Yes. A person writes the thank-you on your packing slip before the box ships. Reviewers thank Jen, Jamie and Ariana by name, which tells you how often the same hands are doing the writing.

What is the Braverly bag people mention?

A reusable cloth bag that wraps many orders. Customers reuse them for cables, markers and car consoles, and one reviewer bought several more once she learned that Braverly supports a woman-owned business in Thailand.

What happens if my order arrives wrong or damaged?

You write to the workshop and a person answers. In the reviews: a cracked case was replaced the morning after the customer emailed, a wrong bundle was reshipped with one-day air within 20 minutes of the photos arriving (the customer kept the wrong one as an apology), and a mis-sized ring was simply made right. Handmade does not mean you are on your own.

Will my piece look exactly like the photo?

Yes. Each product photo is of that specific piece, not a stock render, so the one pictured is the one that arrives. Most people say it looks even better in person, once the light hits the wood and resin.

P.S.

Every design below was poured once, finished by hand, and photographed one at a time before it ships. Pick one, and someone in Elkhart will pack it, write your thank-you on the slip, and send it out. The next letter from Indiana could have your address on it.
